First World War:
The traces of WW1 are still visible everywhere in the region. The frontline between the German army and the allies went straight trough Heuvelland. The scars of Battle for Mesen (1917) and Battle of Kemmelberg (1918) are still present trough the many bunkers, bomb craters, military cemetaries and war monuments.
In the bunkers of the 'Lettenberg' (freely accessible, next to the Kemmelberg) and the trenches of the Bayernwald site (Wijtschate) you can 'feel' the war again, and in the 'Flanders Fields museum' in Ieper (Ypres) the First World War virtually comes alive again.
